Tips for Summer Hair that Beats the Heat

Styles that Never let them See you Sweat

Whether you’re vacationing at the beach, playing sports, dining al fresco, or just enjoying time outside this summer, fun in the sun can put stress on your hair and damage those lovely tresses. So, if you’re struggling with dryness, brassy color, or a case of the frizzies, it’s time to change up your beauty routine.

“Summer is a carefree time when we spend as much time as possible out in the sun. While time in nature is great for our mental and physical health, the sun can really do a number on our hair. It can alter the color, bleach out strands, and cause hair to look (and feel) dry and damaged. It’s important to protect and nourish your hair, so it looks beachy but beautiful — not dry and damaged,” said Nadine Mullings, Brand & Product Development Director at Barely Xtensions.

Mullings offers the following tips to avoid looking like a hot mess this summer:

Minimize damage. We all know that the sun’s rays can damage your skin, but did you know it can also can damage your hair? Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can significantly damage the hair strand. Signs that your hair is sun damaged include discoloration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning, and fizziness. Light-colored and fine hair is particularly vulnerable to sun damage, according to the Cleveland Clinic. To minimize damage, avoid spending prolonged time in the sun. If you are in the sun, make sure you use hair products with UVA and UVB protection.

Get a trim. Hair grows 10 to 15 percent faster during the summer months. Getting a trim is an effective way to revive dry, sun damaged hair and stimulate new growth. Regular trims minimize damage from split ends, a common issue in the summer. Being proactive and getting a trim at the first signs of split ends or dryness can prevent further damage.

Protect before a swim. Chlorinate can leave newly colored hair damaged and blonde hair even worse with a greenish hue. Products like Swimmers Leave-in Conditioner from Sally Beauty Supplyprotects hair while conditioning it.

Embrace the gloss. Beach days are fun, but they are rough on your hair. Sun exposure and sea salt damage hair, making its color less vivid and your locks brassy. If this happens to you, try an in-salon hair gloss, a semi-permanent color that counteracts sun damage, adds moisture, seals the ends, and increases smoothness and shine. A gloss, which lasts for approximately four weeks, will leave your hair looking rich, shiny and healthy.

Hydrate and rehydrate. Sun-damaged hair needs hydration! Moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and styling products keep your locks sleek and manageable. Hot oil treatments, nutrient-rich masks, or balms are great for deep conditioning. Look for products with nourishing ingredients, such as coconut, jojoba, and argan oil, as well as protective butters, and extracts. These replenish and moisturize sun-damaged hair. Avoid sulfates, parabens and other toxic ingredients, which are drying and could only worsen your summer woes.

Switch up your products. Bottom line — summer hair needs more attention and different products than you use during other seasons. This is why you need to use hair care products designed to moisturize and reduce (or reverse) sun damage. When out in the summer sun, we recommend that you use products (such as leave in conditioners) that contain UV protection to help protect your hair and scalp.

Also, try a mild, lightweight shampoo, and wash your hair less frequently to avoid stripping it of protective oils. Use dry shampoos to keep your locks looking fresh and not oily, especially on days you don’t wash it. Finally, once a week, use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any buildup from sunscreen and hair products, etc.

Look neat without the heat. If your hair is already fried from the sun and surf, don’t make matters worse by heat styling. Ditch your blow dryer, curling iron, hot rollers, and straightener and embrace no-heat styles instead. Let your hair air dry. Put your hair in a ponytail. Rock cute braids. As an added bonus, put leave-in conditioner in your hair and then braid it. You can sleep in the braids to moisturize overnight, and when you take the braids out in the morning, you’ll have easy, breezy, summery, healthy-looking waves.

Embrace accessories. Always in style: wear a big, wide brimmed hat to the pool or the beach to protect your scalp and hair. Accessorize by adding a fashionable scarf to cover your hair and scalp as you lounge in the sun. Before you work up a sweat, avoid tangles during outdoor workouts like hikes, bike rides, and beach runs by braiding your hair. Make sure you secure your braids or ponytails with a metal-free hair ties. Rock a cute headband to keep strands in place during active summer days (or lazy Sunday brunches.) Get a sizzling, sexy summer look for a hot date (or girls’ night out) with long, natural-looking extensions or add a pop of color if you don’t want to make a permanent color commitment with Barely Xtensions with colors like teal, pink, purple and unicorn you can have all kinds of fun and blend with your natural hair.  with colors like teal, pink, purple and unicorn you can have all kinds of fun and blend with your natural hair.

Eat healthy. The products you use on your hair are important, but what you eat, and drink also have a direct impact on hair health. Be sure to eat a healthy, nutritious diet full of dark leafy greens, juicy fruits, and lean proteins, and drink tons of water to stay hydrated and looking your best.

Celebrity-Worthy Selfies for Selfie Day, June 21

Social media is such an important part of our lives! Not only can it build up your self-esteem, it can impact your social status, lead you to job offers, and even show you how to prepare for a special date!

“Selfies” remain popular, but they rarely look exactly like we do in real life! According to research by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery,  an average selfie, taken about 12 inches from the face, makes the nasal base appear approximately 30 percent wider and the nasal tip seven percent wider than if the photograph is taken at five feet—a standard portrait distance that provides a more proportional representation of facial features.

Learning to take (and post) the most flattering selfies is important to enhancing your online image. According to the experts at Barely Xtensions, there are some tips to keep in mind as you “point and shoot” amazing selfies for your social media feeds.

“We all want to present our ‘best selves’ on social media,” says Nadine Mullings, National Account Manager with Barely Xtensions. “Mastering the selfie is a critical step to achieving that goal. Always remember, what you post online lives on forever!

“For the most successful selfie, consider your hair, makeup, and outfit, as well as the background, lighting and mood. Ask yourself, ‘What is the message I want to convey?’ Take lots and lots of pictures, so you have plenty of options. That way, you can select the ones that make you feel happy, strong, beautiful, and confident.”

Nadine offers the following tips to look your best in selfies:

Get the Look.  First, look up – not down. Hold the camera above your head and look up at it.  Don’t look down – you’ll risk capturing that dreaded double chin! Then, try holding your phone off to the side (not directly in front of you) for the most flattering angle.  Also, snap some pics with the phone tilted for cool, different looks.

Pass the Phone. Create some distance – the ultimate distance between you and the phone should be 5 feet, so you may have to get a selfie partner or “gasp” use a selfie stick.

Make it Up.  Rock a smoky eye or a bold lip (but not both at once!). Use shimmery highlights, glowy foundation or a daring eyeshadow. Get a sexy blowout or fun extensions – like the ones offered at Barely Xtensions.Super-long hair is in and will look fabulous in your selfies.

Ready for Closeups? Create some mystery by doing a selfie closeup of your very best feature like your lips and hair or your profile.

Let it Glow. Pay attention to your lighting to maximize the “glowy” look. For the best light, go outside. Ideally, take your selfies during the “golden hour” – at sunrise or sunset – when the light is low and most gorgeous. If you need to take indoor pics, stand by the window to maximize the natural light, and hold the phone between you and the light source. Good lighting will make you look rosy, healthy, and beautiful.

Live it Up.  Take pics doing the things that make you truly happy. For some, that means cooking delicious meals. For others, it’s going on a long, sweaty hike. Whether you’re brunching with your boo or playing soccer with your nieces, you’ll look happy in your photos if you’re genuinely happy when you’re taking the photos.

Sense of Place? Show people your amazing vacation, concert, or the beach day you’re enjoying by posing in front of a great background. Try selfies on a dock at the lake, in a field of sunflowers, and in other fun, interesting settings. Beware of photo bombers or anything else in the background that might distract from your stunning face.

Filter Me Attractive. Tons of filter options are available on your smartphone, so experiment to find your faves. Think filters are a waste of time? Certain filters are scientifically proven to make people look more attractive. Yahoo Labs and Georgia Tech analyzed millions of Instagram photos and concluded that the most flattering filters for selfies are Mayfair, Valencia, Hefe, Nashville, and Aden.

Just Smile! Think happy or funny thoughts to get an authentic smile. “Forcing” a smile is obvious and will always look fake. Smile naturally for the best photos and ditch the “duck face” – that look is totally over.

Mix It Up! Mix up your looks, backgrounds, outfits, makeup, accessories and hair for an assortment of selfie looks. Try fun colors, oversized sunnies, dramatic extensions from Barely Xtensions, bohemian headwraps, glittery barrettes, elaborate braids, cowboy hats, or graphic tees. Take photos in nature, at a hip café, with your besties, with your pets, and by yourself. Vary it up to add interest to your social feeds. Most importantly, relax. Don’t overthink it. Remember – this is supposed to be fun!

Barely Xtensions Offers Bride Beauty: Tips to Avoid Fashion Disasters on the Big Day

Barely Xtensions Experts Provide Advice on Hair, Skin, and Fashion for Brides

Wedding season is quickly approaching, and the experts at Barely Xtensions pride ourselves on helping every bride look and feel their best.

As stylists, we’ve heard it all—from fashion disasters to wedding day beauty crises. Over the years, we’ve learned many tips and tricks to help avoid catastrophes and ensure brides are beautiful, radiant and (most of all) happy on their big day!

“All eyes will be on the bride on her special day,” says Nadine Mullings, National Account Manager with Barely Xtensions. “It’s important that she feels radiant, confident, and  comfortable.

“This means wearing the perfect dress, finding a flattering hair style, wearing beautiful makeup and accessories along with avoiding any fashion and beauty disasters that may appear. So, here are some great ways you can prepare for your big day while enjoying every moment.”

Avoid the Biggest Fashion Disasters before your Wedding.

Dress for your body type– not your “dream body.” It’s great to hit the gym and eat healthier in the months leading up to your wedding, but buying a dress based on how you want to look (vs. how you actually look) is a mistake. Few of us are actually able to lose that 30 extra pounds – even if you eat super healthy and hit the gym every day. You just won’t have Jennifer Aniston’s body on your wedding day. Order your actual size – not the size you hope to be. It’s far easier to alter a dress to a smaller size than it is to make a too-small dress bigger!

When choosing your dress, consider the details of your wedding. What time of year is the wedding? What’s the setting—outdoors, in a church, or fancy hotel? Is it a black-tie affair or a more casual beach or garden setting?

Also, what’s your personal style? Are you trendy? Bohemian? Classic and romantic?  Select a dress that feels authentic to your daily style, and also fits the theme and tone of the wedding you’re planning. You will feel much more confident and lovely if you’re in a dress that feels true to you!

Finally, don’t forget the hair! Once you’ve figured out your dress and veil, think about how you want to wear your hair. Many brides complement their natural hair with Barely Xtensions to create the perfect wedding look!!

Should you Change your Look Right before your Wedding?

Avoid making major changes to your hair. The days and weeks before your wedding are NOT the time to try a drastic new look, like cutting it super short or going from the chestnut brown hair that you’ve rocked all your life to bold platinum!

Also, stick to your tried-and-true skincare routine. Don’t try new skincare products that could possibly cause breakouts (or even an allergic reaction). You can make sure your skin looks radiant by drinking plenty of water, getting lots of sleep, and working out to get a nice endorphin-related glow (while also getting rid of some pre-wedding stress).

Speaking of healthy skin, avoid things like chemical peels, microdermabrasion or Botox during the week or two before your wedding. Some people have unfortunate reactions to these procedures and are left with redness, dryness, irritation, peeling and even bruised skin. A dry, red, bruised face is definitely not the bridal look you’re going for!

While you’ve likely been dieting and exercising in the months leading up to the wedding, don’t try to make drastic weight changes. This is absolutely the wrong time to try a juice cleanse or other starvation diets in order to drop the last few pounds quickly.

Extreme diets and cleanses cut too many calories, don’t provide proper nutrients, and leave you feeling weak, jittery and irritable—NOT what you need right before your wedding.  Instead, focus on eating healthy, nutritious and delicious meals and drinking lots of water to look and feel your best.

Create a Breathtaking Bridal Hair-do

Most of all, remember this is your time to shine! Select a hair style that will make you feel gorgeous and confident. Work with a stylist that you trust and meet with him/her prior to the wedding to discuss what type of “hair-do” that you’re envisioning. Think through the style that works well with your dress, venue, theme and the weather.

It’s very important to pick a hair style that works well with your dress. If your gown is simple, you might opt for soft waves or you might pick a more dramatic up do. If it has an open back, you’ll likely want an up do to show off this detail.

The veil or headpiece you select will also impact your hair style, so bring it with you when you meet for the consultation with your stylist. And don’t forget the weather. If you’re getting married in a hot, humid climate (or season), consider an “up do” or a fancy braid to keep your locks under control even as things get steamy.

Many brides get Barely Xtensions prior to their wedding to enhance their natural hair and to look and feel their best. Hair extensions add instant length and volume—perfect for brides that want longer hair for their wedding.

Today’s extensions look and feel super natural, and can be styled straight, wavy, curly or in an up do—whatever you’re envisioning for your wedding day.

Focus on Pre-Wedding Pampering

Preparing for a wedding is a hectic (and stressful!) time. Emotions are running high; you may also have to deal with family drama. This can all be overwhelming as you manage the last minute details of your big event.

Here’s some very good advice: schedule time for self-care, including a relaxing massage, an indulgent mani-pedi, a luxurious bubble bath, and a professional blow out. Take some much-needed “me time” with a walk through the park, a restorative yoga class, or a good book. Taking regular breaks from the chaos will benefit your mind, body and soul.

Top Hair Color Trends For The Season

Barely Xtensions reveals hair color trends for Fall and Winter

When seasons change we tend to want to change up our look. . In fact, research indicates that a woman will change her hairstyle 150 times in her lifetime.*  So if your winter beauty game includes switching up your hair color, we’ve got you covered! We turned to Barely Xtensions to get all the info you need to have the hottest hair color this fall and winter!

“This season hair color is all about having a natural color placement with hints of warm and spicy or cool and icy. It’s all about warm blondes, smoky browns, natural reds and icy platinum. You can even add Barely Xtensions for added dimension if you want to give your hair a break from processing it,” says Jennifer Hutchens, Brand & Product Development Director at Barely Xtensions.

Here are the top five hair colors worth trying for fall and winter:

Ice Blonde:  Ice, Ice Baby! If you want to make a statement this winter, this is the way to go! Take it cooler with a striking blend of ice blonde with hues of silver to match the icy weather! Go even more icy by adding Barely Xtensions in Platinum Ice and Metallic Silver! You can also make a toning shampoo part of your beauty routine to keep it cool all winter long!

Smoky Tones:  This perfectly blended earth tone is a cool-toned ashy gray approach to hair color. It’s monochromatic finish just might be our favorite yet! Keep it on the lighter side by adding lowlights or take it all the way dark by taking fully brown. Just be sure to stick to only cool to neutral brown and blonde shades to get the earthy tint. Barely Xtensions in the color Chestnut is the perfect complement to extend the length of your smoky tones for longer more voluminous hair.

Spiced Brunette:  For some of us, brunette can be, well, boring. But adding a variety of warm highlights gives it radiance and dimension. To keep it spicy, stay away from blonde and choose subtle caramel, copper and red hues. You can even use hair extensions to do this by clipping in the Barely Xtensions Balayage Collection in Espresso/Medium Dark Brown for effortless pops of spice on dark hair.

Flannel Warmth:  Just like a flannel shirt on a cool day, we are inspired by deep, rich shades of copper, auburn, and red to mimic a warm flannel shirt. It’s all about mixing the colors together adding pops of brighter red and copper to a deep red base. Barely Xtensions offers extensions in Red and Copper that both incorporate multiple tones of red and copper In one that would be a great addition to this style for added dimension and warmth.

Deep Espresso:  Take a shot with espresso! Brunettes are starting to lean towards ultra-dark espresso tones that can look striking on a variety of complexions. You can take it new generation with ashy and cool-toned colors or stay traditional with warm chocolate hues that will never go out of style. You can even add Barely Xtensions for added length, dimension and volume! There are a wide variety of deep brown colors offered like Dark Brown and Espresso.
